The early church chose seven men full of the Holy Spirit, wisdom, and with a good reputation to serve in the church so that the apostles could spend their time devoted to prayer and studying the Word. One of these men, Stephen, was bearing so much fruit, performing so many miracles, that the local religious leaders took notice. They wanted to stop what he was doing, so they stirred up men and got them to bring false accusations against him. As they did, he sat there looking at them with the face of an angel. And was able to respond to their questioning. Why? Because he was ready to serve. He was filled with the Holy Spirit. He knew the Truth. And he knew that the God of the universe was on His side!

How can we be ready to serve? Spend time with God (Ephesians 1:17).

Read the Bible (Psalm 19:7-10, 119:11-16, John 7:17). Carry a Bible, Gospel tract, or promise book (2 Timothy 2:4). Trust God to lead you (1 Kings 19:12, Isaiah 30:21, Psalm 32:8; John 10:27, John 16:13). Trust God to give you the words to say (John 14:26).

Look up these verses. Let them motivate you. When we have personal discipline in spiritual matters, we will be ready for whatever God has for us! And find the abundant life He designed for us (Ephesians 2:10).
